On Saturday afternoon, we flew over to our hometown to see our Moms for Mother’s Day.
I love when we’re able to fly for several reasons. First, it cuts our travel time from 5 hours to 1 hour and 15 minutes. But I also love to fly in a small plane because it’s so peaceful.
Flying in a small plane is nothing like flying commercial. Commercial flights are crowded and loud, and you have to stand in lines. And they make you take your shoes off just to get on the plane; when I fly with Patrick I only take my shoes off if I want to rest my feet on the front panel.
Family shot. I know, the headsets are cool. You’re jealous. But I also love to fly in a small plane for the scenery. The patchwork quilt of farmland dotted here and there by small towns can entertain me for hours. I trace county roads and highways with my fingertips, covering in mere seconds distances that would take hours driving. It’s fun to watch the straight angled roads of Kansas and Oklahoma snake into the rolling hills of the Ozarks.
This next picture is an aerial view of our new land! It’s hard to see, but find the cross of roads on the far left. There is a small brown patch in the southeast corner of that cross. That’s our home site! To the right of that you can see a large white rectangle surrounded by other outbuildings. That is the home and hangar of our neighbors, Lee and Jayne. Lee is the contractor building our place. Cozy, huh?
To say that Miles loved the flight would be an understatement. He was delighted with the whole process. We worried that the engine noise might frighten him, but he was thrilled! He wanted to play with the yoke the whole time.
Like father, like son!
My favorite part of the trip is always flying over the lakes. All lakes are beautiful from the air, but I love my lakes. I grew up swimming, skiing, and boating on these lakes near my hometown. When I see them I know we’re just a few minutes from landing.
Bull Shoals Lake, and parts of the White River
It’s good to go home.Next up: Mother’s Day Brunch. Or “the time I gained 15 lbs in one sitting” Mmmm…
